5 Tips for Healthier Gums

When it comes to improving our dental health and developing a beautiful smile, it is essential that we lookout for various tooth problems such as, crooked teeth, bacteria, plaque, etc and keep our teeth protected by taking necessary measures.

But is that all? Does taking care of our teeth only, will improve our dental health and give us a perfect smile that we have always wanted?

 

The answer is No. Another important part of our mouth is ‘gums’ that act as a sealing for our teeth. It is normally a misconception that healthy teeth mean healthy gums. Even if your teeth are as white as pearl and are free from all cavities and germs, it doesn’t mean your gums are in perfect condition. In fact, you never know, you might be suffering from some gum disease.

Gum diseases can easily fool you as they don’t cause any pain. Hence, you need to be very vigilant about your gums. If you have a sticky film-like substance hovering around your gum line then it is Plaque. Plaque is the beginning of gum disease. There are two types of gum diseases:

Gingivitis: If you are gums tends to bleed and are red, tender and swollen then you are experiencing the initial stage of gum disease.

Periodontitis: The advanced stage of gum disease is Periodontitis that can seriously damage your teeth and bones.

Alarming and daunting as it sounds, the good news is that gum diseases are preventable. With right care and measures taken, your gums will not only become healthier but also stronger.

Here are tips for developing healthier gums:

Brush Your Teeth

This may sound cliché but it still works. Although, we have been told numerous times to brush our teeth twice a day but majority of us don’t comply. In order to fight germs it is vital that we brush our teeth twice in a day at least, if not after every meal.

Avoid Sugar, Eat Healthy

The health of your teeth and gums depend on what you eat. You should intake a smart and balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products, etc. The biggest enemy of your gums is sugar. This is because remains of sugar in our mouth are converted in to acid by the bacteria, which fuel tooth decay and plaque. Hence, sugar should be avoided.

Stop Smoking

You wouldn’t be surprise to know that smoking stains your teeth, turn them yellowish and causes to oral cancer. It initiates different gum diseases and prevents your gums to heal if damaged. For healthier gums, you must quit smoking

Make Use of Fluoride and Therapeutic Mouthwash

Instead of using toothpaste and mouthwash that contains sugar, it is better to opt for toothpaste that contains fluoride and a medicated mouthwash. This will help in fighting the germs and bacteria inside your mouth.

Regular Dental Checkups

As mentioned before, gum problems are not easy to detect, as they cause no pain. However, you can take a professional help in this regard. To make sure your gums are germs and bacteria free, you should take out time to visit the dentist regularly so that if there is any problem, it can be cured at an early stage.

It is extremely important that we don’t ignore our gums. In order to have an overall good dental health, you should follow these tips to make your gums healthier.
