Going for an interview but conscious of your bad breath? About to propose to the the one special person you love, but irritated about your bad breath? Bad breath or morning breath is a common symptom experienced by people of different ages. It is often a source of embarrassment and sometimes if prolonged, can cause anxiety and depression in the person. It can undermine your confidence and become a hurdle in your path towards success.

The medical terminology used for bad breath is Halitosis. The underlying problem which causes halitosis is basically poor dental hygiene; whereas, some other oral infections can also become it cause. The good news is,  that bad breath, or halitosis, can be cured.

Here are a few simple tips which you can follow to get rid of your bad breath problem:

1-      Spend a little more time in the morning towards refreshing your mouth, brushing and flossing; especially gargling with cold water. Swishing around cold water in your mouth can help freshen up your breath in the morning and wash out any staleness.

2-      You can mix a pinch of salt in a few drops of lemon juice and massage this mixture on your teeth. Keep scrubbing your teeth with this mixture for a couple of minutes and then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water. The lemon and salt combined, will not only freshen up your breath but also contribute towards brightening your teeth.

3-      We tend to ignore our tongue and focus on our teeth only. Bacteria can build up on your tongue which can become a source of bad breath. Clean your tongue after every meal with a tongue scraper. Some toothbrushes also come with tongue scrapers at their back. Try to use such a toothbrush and clean your tongue as well when you brush your teeth.

4-      Rather than spending a considerable amount of money on purchasing mouthwashes most of which contain alcohol, make your very own alcohol free mouthwash at home by mixing baking soda and peppermint essential oil in water. Rinse your mouth with this mixture at-least twice a day.

5-      Eating food which helps fight the bacteria build up in your mouth can contribute towards reducing bad breath. Apples, for example, help clean the teeth since they contain pectin, an ingredient which helps fight bad odor. Yogurt contains active cultures that fight with odor producing bacteria. Cinnamon, being antimicrobial also helps fight off odor producing bacteria. You can chew fennel or if you find chewing it difficult, you can make a fennel tea by boiling a few fennel seeds in water for about 5 to 10 minutes.

6-      Drinking water regularly, throughout the day also helps in keeping your mouth and thus your breath fresh. Water helps in rinsing your teeth and also loosening of particles from around your teeth, thus reduces bacteria build up and also the chances of you getting bad breath.
