Almost 50% of the adult population in US has bad breath and it is nothing to be ashamed of because everyone goes through this at some point in time. But not many people are fully aware of what causes bad breath actually. The bacteria present in our mouth breaks down food and salivary proteins that gives off a foul odor.

Even though bad breath seems like a persistent problem that many people feel, there are many ways that one can adopt to get rid of bad breath permanently.

Brush Twice a Day

Plaque is one of the main reasons why bad breath occurs but this can be combated effectively if you brush your teeth for three minutes properly after every twelve hours. Also, sometimes gummy food particles get stuck in the gaps between our teeth that give off a foul odor for as long as they remain trapped which is why it is extremely important to floss every day after meals.

However, never try to brush your teeth by applying too much pressure on the gums as this will not make any major difference other than ruin the enamel of your teeth for good.

Scrape the Tongue

Most people are not aware of the fact that our tongue acts like a Velcro for odor causing bacteria. In order to eliminate bad breath permanently, you must scrape your tongue gently with a scraper that is usually on the back side of the toothbrush. This will effectively remove the layer of bacteria, dead cells, and food debris that would otherwise cause bad breath if left unattended.

Quit Smoking

Smokers often have bad breath because the smoking tobacco is not only dangerous for the gums but it takes a toll on dental health and hygiene as well. Smoking causes bad breath, damages the gums and stains the teeth. The best way to maintain proper oral hygiene is to reduce tobacco consumption gradually and then quit smoking altogether.

Avoid Certain Foods

There are certain foods that can cause bad breath like onions and garlic but brushing after eating them will not really make a difference because the food enzymes and smelly substances have already entered the blood stream by then. The ideal way to avoid bad breath is to not have such foods before you go out.

Use Mouthwash

Using mouthwash is a great option for preventing bad breath. Make a habit of using mouthwash after brushing so that it can kill all remaining bacteria. However, most mouthwashes use alcohol as an active ingredient to kill bad breath causing germs which is not the best ingredient as it is harsh on the gums and teeth.

Try using a milder mouthwash containing zinc chloride that will not only effectively kill germs in the mouth but it will maintain proper oral hygiene.

Sugar Free Chewing Gums

Another effective method for preventing bad breath is to chew sugar free chewing gum after dinner instead of candies. The reason why chewing gum helps is because it increases the saliva in the mouth that is perfect for keeping your teeth in its prime condition.

These are some of the ways you can get rid of bad breath effectively. Let us know what you think about preventing bad breath by leaving a comment below.
